What Is Search Engine Optimisation?
Having a website is all well and good but unless your
potential customers can find you than having a business website
is pointless. Unfortunately, with literally millions of
websites on the Internet and thousands in your particular
market, the chances of a potential customer stumbling across
your website is almost non-existent unless you employ SEO
techniques.
What Is Search Engine
Optimisation?
SEO is basically a set of techniques used to promote a
clients website; this is achieved not just by obtaining high
rankings in the search engines but more by attracting targeted
traffic to the clients website - in other words ensuring that
the internet users visiting the website are highly likely to be
interested in the content and services provided by the client,
ie, not just 'surfing'.
UK search engine optimisation can be split into two areas.
On-site and off-site optimisation. The on-site optimisation
ensures that the pages are coded and set up in way that is
attractive to the search engines, making sure the content is
correctly structured for search and writing the tags to attract
search engines, those factors must be covered whilst still
making sure the site and content is attractive to human
visitors as well.
The off-site optimisation is becoming more and more
important. This is because the search engines are constantly
evolving and changing the way they work. A couple of examples
of this are; a few years ago off-site optimisation wasn't
necessary now it is essential and in the last few months alone
Google have announced three massive changes to the way that
search will work in the future.
The real art to SEO is staying in step with the search
engines and all the techniques we use are completely ethical
(we don't use 'tricks') and are designed for long term
effect.
To return to off-site optimisation - this is used to build
the 'credibility' of the clients site according to the values
held by the search engines and to create a 'saturation' effect
whereby the clients site can be found by Internet users through
a huge network of links.
The whole key to SEO is getting the keywords right and this
forms the blueprint that will be used to create the SEO
campaign.
SEO (done properly) is a long term strategy designed to
increase the clients website visibility and rankings over an
extended period and a wide area of the net.
